Jamie Raevis, MD

Dr. Joseph “Jamie” Raevis, MD, joins Monmouth Retina from the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA, where he previously served as the Director of Vitreoretinal surgery and a clinical instructor at Harvard Medical School. He has also lectured at various academic institutions including: Massachusetts Eye and Ear/Harvard Ophthalmology, the Joslin Diabetes Center, the University of Wisconsin, and State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical School.

Prior to his work in Boston, Dr. Raevis graduated with the highest distinction of summa cum laude from The College of New Jersey. He then attended Georgetown University in Washington, DC where he earned his medical degree. Dr. Raevis completed a vitreoretinal fellowship at the University of Wisconsin - Madison and an ophthalmic residency at State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate, where he served as chief resident.

Throughout his training, Dr. Raevis has acquired a diverse set of surgical skills including: vitrectomy, scleral buckle element, pneumatic retinopexy, subretinal injection, macular hole repair, internal limiting membrane flap, secondary intraocular lens placement (MTA, CT Lucia, AO60, enVista) and repositioning (Yamane, lasso, McCannel techniques & exchange), iridoplasty with Siepser sliding knot, intraocular foreign body removal, ruptured globe repair, cataract extraction (phacoemulsification & pars plana lensectomy), endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation, endoscopic vitrectomy, choroidal drainage and radioactive plaque placement/removal for melanoma.

Dr. Raevis has worked to publish original research, including several papers, posters, abstracts, and book chapters/essays. Dr. Raevis was the principal investigator on two studies evaluating patient discomfort during intravitreal injections and retinal examinations. He has also been involved in several industry-sponsored trials. In addition to seeing patients and operating on complex retina cases, Dr. Raevis has stayed active in education by having taught Harvard undergraduate, medical students and ophthalmic residents.

Dr. Raevis has served as a past president of The College of New Jersey's Habitat for Humanity chapter and a volunteer EMT. He also traveled to South Africa where he spent two months volunteering in the Masiphumelele Health Clinic. Dr. Raevis enjoys spending time with his family and is looking forward to his return to New Jersey to work with Monmouth Retina. His hobbies include hiking, camping, rock climbing, canoeing, and astronomy.

Dr. Raevis hopes to continue conducting research, teaching and lecturing the next generation of eyecare professionals.
